Flag Day with the Betsy Ross House

June 14; programs at 11 am, 1 pm, and 3 pm (see below for details)

 

Virtual programming is scheduled throughout the day on the Betsy Ross House’s Facebook page. At 11 am, Betsy Ross, herself, discusses the history of the flag and its evolution over time leading up to the Flag Resolution of 1777 and General Washington’s famous visit to her shop. At 1 pm, Betsy is back to talk about the various symbols that have appeared on the flag over time and their wide-ranging meanings. Then at 3 pm, Rev. Richard Allen, who founded the African Methodist Episcopal Church in Philadelphia, reflects on what patriotism means to him as a formerly enslaved person who purchased his freedom, served during the Revolutionary War, and then devoted his life to the hard work required to assure that the blessings of freedom, justice, and equality be enjoyed by all Americans.
