Meet Elephant and Piggie Saturday at the Mt. Airy Kids’ Literary Festival

Meet the lovable friends from the popular series, as well as favorite authors at a festival celebrating children’s literature!

Celebrate your favorite books—and discover some new ones—at this Saturday’s Mt. Airy Kids’ Literary Festival hosted by Big Blue Marble Bookstore. The event takes place on May 19 from 10 am—5 pm, and features appearances by many local authors, storytimes, games, workshops, and of course Elephant and Piggie from Mo Willems’ popular series.

The event will kick off at 10 am with a storytime with Elephant and Piggie at the Charles W. Henry School playground. Kids will love seeing Elephant and Piggie act out some of their best-loved adventures—we are personally hoping for Elephants Cannot Dance! but we love them all!

After storytime, they will lead a parade around Mt. Airy Village—costumes and pets are welcome—and return to the playground for photo ops with the characters at 11:30 am.

In the afternoon, Big Blue Marble Bookstore  will host an Author Extravaganza from 2—5 pm. Come meet favorite authors—all with local roots—and discover new books to love. There will also be activities like crafts and games for all ages to enjoy, as well as an informative session about children’s publishing.

At 2 pm, there will be picture book readings by an amazing group of authors: Barbara DiLorenzo, Marie and Baldev Lamba, Andrea Tsurumi, and Greg Pizzoli. The afternoon will also include a watercolor lesson by DiLorenzo and Pictionary with Amy Ignatow. At 3 pm, authors Doug Weschler, Kate Garchinsky, and Rob Bierregaard will host a session on creating nature books with children.

To end the program, there will be an informative session for any kids and adults who are interested in publishing their own books for young people. Marie Lamba, who is both a picture book and young adult author as well as literary agent, is sure to have a great deal of insight to share.

Also sitting on the panel are authors Ignatow, DiLorenzo, Eric Bell, and Tsurumi. Their experience ranges from publishing multiple successful series (in Ignatow’s case) to being a first-time author (in Bell’s case). Be sure to bring your aspiring authors to learn from this group’s wealth of knowledge.

The Mt. Airy Kids’ Literary Festival will be held May 19 from 10 am—5 pm, beginning at the Charles W. Henry School (located at 601 Carpenter Lane in Philadelphia) and ending at Big Blue Marble Bookstore (located at 551 Carpenter Lane) in Philadelphia). Be sure to check the website for their morning rain plan—if there is light rain, it will go as planned, but they will move the Elephant and Piggie portion of the day inside in case of thunderstorm.
