Yuki’s newest work, “Memories of the Moon”, is inspired by the diary of a prisoner in a Japanese internment camp during WWII. The gentleman was imprisoned in a room without clocks, so he logged the passage of time by counting the full moons. Yuki’s choreographic works have been presented at various adjudicated dance festivals across the country, such as the Booking Dance Festival at Lincoln Center, WHITE WAVE’s Solo/Duo Festival at Dixon Place, Come Together Dance Festival at the Suzanne Roberts Theater, CDCfest at Orlando Rep Theater and the Virtual Pathway Dance Festival to name a few.
The second piece, “Jouska” will be choreographed by company Associate Director and Dance Artist, Olivia Wood. A 10 minute piece for 3 dancers, “Jouska” (or the compulsive replaying of a conversation or situation in one’s mind) is loosely inspired by Toshikazu Kawaguchi’s literary masterpiece, Before the Coffee Gets Cold. It is a beautiful novel in which the characters may go back in time only for brief moments, under very specific conditions. One of these conditions is that nothing they do in the past will have any effect on the present. Loved ones cannot be resurrected, past wrongs cannot be erased. In this piece, the choreographer seeks to portray these “what-if” conversations through movement to show that while the past will remain unchanged, the present and future state of being are most assuredly affected. Cannonball will be “Jouska”‘s debut.
