Flip through history with a selection of historical lab notebooks filled with scientific discoveries\, unexpected artwork\, and a few lingering mysteries. Then take a page from the past and create your own lab notebook! There will be hands-on crafts and activities for all ages. \nEver taken a science class? What experiment—or lab mishap—has stuck with you over the years? Drop by the museum and share your favorite classroom memories. We’d love to compare notes! \nScience has been taught in countless ways through the ages. From children’s chemistry sets to building block models of molecules. Explore the many tools people have used to understand the world around them through our handling collection.\nMany of the artifacts on display tonight will be featured in the upcoming Closer Read exhibit on historical laboratory notebooks. At 6pm\, curator Taylor Bailey will offer a brief preview of the exhibition and highlight a few fascinating stories hidden in the margins. \nBe sure to pencil this event into your calendar. DESCRIPTION:Join us for our FREE Open House to learn more about the Brass & Wind Project\, a program for students grades 3rd-6th who are interested in learning the musical skills essential to playing a band instrument. \nIn weekly large and small group classes\, fundamental skills will be taught\, allowing the student to thrive in a low-pressure and supportive environment. Skills taught include: \nBody awareness skills: breathing\, blowing\, posture and how to properly hold an instrument. \nExecutive & technical: embouchure formation\, finger control & dexterity\, and basic tone production. \nMusicianship skills: singing\, playing\, moving\, improvising\, creating music of all kinds\, and reading music notation alone and with others. \nThe skills learned will prepare them for participation in a traditional Band program and allow them to transition to playing a full-sized band instrument with relative ease. \nNo prior experience with instrumental music is required. Students are taught by a Master Teacher and supported by Temple University undergraduate music education and performance instrumental interns.

Your wish will then be added to the wall to encourage further discussion\, and to display the diversity of lived experiences\, stories\, and desires of our community. \nThe Free Library encourages patrons to make their voice heard and delve deeper into civic engagement. By advancing literacy\, guiding learning\, and inspiring curiosity\, the Free Library of Philadelphia can provide avenues for patrons to work towards making their wishes into reality. \nThis program is a part of the exhibition celebrating America’s 250th\, Philadelphia: For the People\, which will be on display from May 2026 – January 2027 in the 2nd Floor West Gallery of the Parkway Central Library.
