SUMMARY:PECO Family Jams: Portraits in the Gardens
DESCRIPTION:The Magic Gardens’ current exhibition\, “Entre Raíces y Alas: Obras de Santiago Galeas / Between Roots and Wings: Works by Santiago Galeas\,” features the artist’s unique blend of realistic portraits and fantastic landscapes. Families are invited to get creative and turn their own image into a work of art using scrapbooking materials\, all while surrounded by Galeas’ stunning pieces. Families are welcome to bring a photo from home\, or have their picture taken at the Magic Gardens and printed out on the spot for free. \nFree tours of the fully mosaicked basement will be offered at 12:30\, 1:30\, 2:30\, and 3:30 pm\, where visitors can explore the many faces found throughout the Magic Gardens Museum’s mosaic collection. \nPECO Family Jams is the Magic Gardens’ family-oriented program held on the second Sunday of every month from noon to 4:00 pm. Crafts and basement tours are included with regular admission. Families are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance.

The Franklin Square Playground will be fully open and free both daytime and during the evening hours\, accessible only from 7th Street. The lanterns can be viewed for free during the day with a free scavenger hunt\, while a ticket is required for nighttime entrance after 6 pm (no re-entry). The park closes daily at 5 pm to prepare for the nightly Festival. Advance tickets are strongly recommended. \nThe Philadelphia Chinese Lantern Festival Pass provides unlimited entry for the duration of the Festival: adults (with ID) $90 and children (ages 3–12) $50. DESCRIPTION:Join Newlin Grist Mill as they dig into history with archaeological excavations and learn more about the site through the evidence under their feet! \nThe public is invited to participate (or just watch) as Newlin Grist Mill’s professional archaeologist\, Keith Doms\, and a dedicated corps of archaeology volunteers seek to gain a deeper understanding of the site’s history through careful excavation using scientific techniques and thorough documentation. Depending on the day\, visitors might be invited to help screen excavated soil to look for small artifacts or assist with cleaning artifacts that have already been excavated. \nFree and open to all ages (children must be accompanied by an adult). No reservations are required. If guests would like to help out with the dig\, be sure to wear clothes that can get dirty and close-toed footwear. Bring work gloves; the site has a limited number of pairs to lend. For safety\, hands-on participation is limited to those ages 5+.
