Whether you’ve taken a pottery class before or this is your first time using the wheel\, you will be able to develop your ceramic skills to create beautiful functional pieces. The Class will cover foundational topics\, including centering\, handle making\, throwing functional forms (cups\, bowls\, plates\, etc.)\, trimming\, and surface decorations. Come and learn the joys of making art you can use! \nClass will run Tuesday nights September 2nd – October 7th 6-9pm \nPlease note that this workshop takes place in the Utility Works basement\, which is only accessible via stairs. The class requires participants to be able to sit and/or stand for at least three hours and use their hands for two hours. You must be able to lift 25lbs. There are two gender-neutral bathrooms available for students\, including one that is ADA accessible. If you have specific accessibility needs or questions\, please contact us in advance so we can discuss potential accommodations.

DESCRIPTION:This First Friday\, explore the intersection between art and science! \nSee a display of artists’ books created by the Guild of Book Workers inspired by the Institute’s collection of historic sample books on textiles\, paints\, and dyes. These works of art will be on view on the museum’s mezzanine level\, along with the Institute’s inspirational sample books on display on the first floor. Members of the Guild will also be on hand at a bookmaking table to show off the tools of their trade and to demonstrate how the magic happens! \nHear from the president of the Guild and Institute curator Jesse Smith\, who will kick off the opening of this unique exhibit with a gallery talk at 6pm. \nAnd for all you bookworms: you’re in the right place! Learn about the history of parchment and discover what the materials of books can tell us beyond the words contained within them with handling collection activities from 5pm to 7pm.

Participants will experiment with various ingredients\, techniques\, and historic recipes. \nEach program will have a different theme – this season\, we’re exploring topics related to the ongoing archaeological excavations around the Trimble House complex in coordination with our Public Archaeology program! \n2025 Kitchen Encounters: \n– April 19 – Butter & Cheese – inspired by the excavation of a dairy addition on the Trimble barn site\n– May 17 – Cornmeal – inspired by the Trimble corn crib ruins\n– June 28 – Ices\, Creams\, & Jellies – inspired by the Trimble icehouse ruins\n– September 6 – Tea Time – inspired by tea service artifacts that have been excavated onsite\n– October 18 – Beer Brewing – inspired by the extant Trimble brewhouse & the Trimble malthouse ruins\n– November 15 – Sausage Making – inspired by the later use of the Trimble brewhouse as a smokehouse for an abattoir that operated out of the original Trimble House kitchen
