Smith Memorial Playground to Reopen and Kick Off Spring With Play-a-Palooza

Welcome spring with outdoor play, giveaways, and much more!

Editor’s Note: All photos were taken pre-pandemic. Please be sure to wear a mask and follow all safety guidelines.

After a year unlike any other, Smith Memorial Playground is looking ahead to brighter days and will be kicking off the season at their annual Play-a-Palooza. Fairmount Park’s 6.5-acre playground’s grand opening party will take place from noon – 4 pm March 27, and will include lots of exciting (and socially distanced) activities, giveaways, and more.

The playground’s annual Play-a-Palooza marks the official start of the season, as their free Spring visiting hours begin the day after the event. But this year’s event takes on even more significance as restrictions ease and outdoor play has been even more important.

While the indoor Playhouse is currently under construction, Play-a-Palooza will introduce the brand new “Play Path” outdoor exploration space.

In addition to a full afternoon of outdoor play and adventure, families may also drop off musical instruments and book donations to be distributed city-wide by nonprofits Musicopia and Tree House Books. Smith will be a featured stop on Tree House Books’ new “Traveling Tree House,” a mobile, interactive book giveaway experience created in response to literacy and educational disparities exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Play-a-Palooza will be held on Saturday, March 27 from noon to 4 pm. Tickets are $10 per child, and free for Smith members and ACCESS cardholders. Advance ticket purchases are highly encouraged. Walk-ups to this event may be subject to long wait times or denied entry to keep total capacity within CDC and state guidelines for safety.

Smith Memorial Playground is located in Fairmount Park, at 3500 Reservoir Drive in Philadelphia.
