DESCRIPTION:Help celebrate nature and protect the environment with an Earth Day volunteer event! \nEach year\, Newlin brings together diverse volunteers from the community\, including individuals\, families\, scout troops\, and youth groups\, to work on projects that improve habitat for wildlife\, protect important natural resources\, and preserve the park’s plant and animal communities. \nVolunteers will meet to plant trees\, remove invasive plant species\, and improve habitat for birds and wetland wildlife. Groups will be scheduled for 3 hour shifts. \nRegister for a shift by emailing jshahan@newlingristmill.org.

They will meet year-round residents\, visit exciting migrants\, and learn the basics of bird identification and biology. \nFamilies and beginners are welcome for these free bird walks! A limited number of binoculars are available for use\, but participants are encouraged to bring their own if they have them. Participants should meet by the Log Cabin.

DESCRIPTION:Join Newlin Grist Mill as they dig into history with archaeological excavations and learn more about the site through the evidence under their feet! \nThe public is invited to participate (or just watch) as Newlin Grist Mill’s professional archaeologist\, Keith Doms\, and a dedicated corps of archaeology volunteers seek to gain a deeper understanding of the site’s history through careful excavation using scientific techniques and thorough documentation. Depending on the day\, visitors might be invited to help screen excavated soil to look for small artifacts or assist with cleaning artifacts that have already been excavated. \nFree and open to all ages (children must be accompanied by an adult). No reservations are required. If guests would like to help out with the dig\, be sure to wear clothes that can get dirty and close-toed footwear. Bring work gloves; the site has a limited number of pairs to lend. For safety\, hands-on participation is limited to those ages 5+.
