We already knew that Smith Memorial Playground and Playhouse was one of our favorite places in Philadelphia, and thought they really could not get any better. Until now – last month SUN Preschool launched in its own space in the Playhouse! SUN Preschool, short for Smith Urban Nature, started this school year with one classroom, and will later expand to two, eventually serving 40 children ages 3—5.

The team at SUN Preschool is made up of Director Zero Jones, a teaching artist, an environmental educator, and early childhood educators. Jones shares, “We are a Reggio Emilia inspired program, meaning we use our environment and tailor our learning experiences to the children’s individual interests and needs.” And you can’t beat the environment! Smith Memorial Playground and Playhouse is located in East Fairmount Park, and has been serving children for over 100 years. The Playhouse and the 6.5 acres of open fields, wooded terrain, and sloped hills contain a playground and a historic wooden slide.

SUN Preschool is hosting a series of Community Dreaming Gatherings open to the public, their neighbors and families. Coming up next is their Community Dreaming Dinner on Thursday, November 2, 4 – 6 pm. Attendees can tour the SUN Preschool Classrooms, both indoor and out, as well as engage in kid-friendly activities. See more information and RSVP. Smith Urban Nature Preschool is located at Smith Memorial Playground and Playhouse (3500 Reservoir Drive, Philadelphia, PA 19121). SUN Preschool’s program runs 9:00 am – 3:00 pm. Before and after care (starting at 8:00 am and ending at 5:30 pm) is also available. SUN offers full-time, part-time, trial enrollment, and co-op options for interested families. Spaces are still available for the 2023-24 school year.
