Beehive at Bok | 2024 Family Favorite Honoree – Playspace
Description
Beehive at Bok is an indoor playspace designed for babies, toddlers, and children ages birth to 6 and their caregivers (older siblings welcome!). They offer drop-in play, membership options, arts, music and movement-based classes, story times, playgroups, and private event space.
Beehive is an inclusive environment that strives to meet the play and sensory needs of all children. From climbing structures and tumbling mats to cozy nooks and sensory walls, Beehive was designed with the unique needs and interests of babies and young children in mind. Recognizing the young child as an artist, musician, dancer, gardener, cook, writer and reader of the world (and so much more!), Beehive reflects the many voices of children and provides opportunities for them to explore, play, and create alongside others in the community.
Camp Beehive is a crafting summer camp for children ages 4-9 years old. Each week, immersive crafts have been chosen that will help shape our theme, activities, and adventures. Our program day runs from 8:30 AM- 3 PM and aftercare is available from 3-5:30 PM for an additional fee.
Camp Beehive has 3 "home" spaces in the Bok Building: Beehive, Beehive Upstairs (Beehive's new classroom, crafteteria and board game cafe) and The Craftship, artist Steph Kimmel's studio. We also travel to local parks and spend time on the Bok stoops.
Beehive welcomes and encourages all members of the community to join us. At Beehive, their goal is to create a community that is diverse, supportive and that meets the needs of children and their caregivers.
Community Love
"Beehive has been such a beacon of happiness in South Philly since it opened. Before Covid-19, my daughter looked forward to our weekly (or more often) visits to the play space. Since Covid, Beehive has continued to be committed to maintaining a sense of community amongst families in South Philadelphia with their virtual learning programming. I have seen Beehive's commitment to help maintain some normalcy in children's lives during this unprecedented time." -Rachael S.

I can’t tell you how many times my son has said “I miss Beehive SO MUCH!” since the pandemic has limited all of our socializing. And you’d think it’d been around for years and years, by how often it comes up in conversations of what we long for from “the before”(COVID times) with my mama friends and kids. Pre-pandemic, Beehive, despite being only a few months old, had created a social hub for local families with a wide variety of programs, and inclusive, affordable options. It really filled a need in our South Philly community. It’s the kind of place where, on a Friday evening, you’d find all your kids’ best friends and yours, and coordinate who was picking up a pizza to bring (pro-parenting move right there). The play space is clean and bright and toys are all age appropriate (and zoned well so the littlest aren’t getting mowed down by the bigger kiddos). It’s also great for trying out toys or getting to play with the kind of toys we all wish we could fit into our tiny row homes! The staff is warm and welcoming, and it’s a great space for birthday parties (whenever we can do that again!)
