James Hampton, creator of The Throne of the Third Heaven of the Nations’ Millennium General Assembly, is one of the Art Environment creators who inspired Isaiah Zagar when he was making the Magic Gardens. Hampton used cardboard, foil, and found objects to build an elaborate shrine inside a former carriage house in Washington D.C. This work was discovered only after Hampton’s death. It is now on display at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Come build your own sculpture inspired by Hampton’s artwork and discover Hampton references in the Magic Gardens Museum.
Learn more about James Hampton during free tours of the fully mosaicked basement at 12:30, 1:30, 2:30, and 3:30 p.m.
