Day 1: Philly Family Explores Yellowstone Country Montana

After landing at Bozeman, we spent some time in town, grabbed a bite and some supplies (a bottle of wine, cheese and snacks) at the Bozeman Food Co-op, then hit the road, eager for adventure in our Subaru Outback. The drive east to Livingston is beautiful; with green valleys, rising hills, and distant peaks.

The Murray Hotel was our first night, an authentic Western hotel with modern amenities built by the Northern Pacific Railroad to greet visitors to Yellowstone National Park. The lobby showcases the hotel’s history with photographs and artifacts, a social room with games and puzzles, and we all got a thrill from our first ride in the manual Otis elevator. The yellow brick train station across the street from the hotel now houses a railroad museum, and we walked to dinner at Montana’s Rib & Chop House.

Recommendation for the beginning of your trip: Visit the Montana Grizzly Encounter on the way to Livingston, home to several rescued bears. We went on our last day of this trip and learned everything we needed to know about bears in the region. Definitely get your trip souvenirs at Montana Grizzly Encounter too: 100% of the proceeds support the care of the bears. I grabbed t-shirts for the kids and a bear mug for my morning coffee, which has helped me ease into each morning to remember this amazing trip.

Next time we visit Livingston: We might check out Chico Hot Springs Resort & Day Spa for a good soak after our day of traveling.
