What to Expect: A Typical Day at the Specter Center’s Squash Camp

“Campers participate in structured daily training, featuring skill-enhancing drills, fitness building, coached match play, and interactive sessions designed to improve technique and game strategy,” according to Lightner.

The camps are designed for all levels of player, from complete beginners to those with competitive experience. Each day follows a theme with focus on a specific shot, helping children progressively build their skills throughout the week. Beyond just playing squash, campers learn proper movement techniques, how to officiate matches, and how to navigate tournaments – valuable knowledge for those who might continue with the sport.

Daily activities balance squash instruction with fitness and fun. Children participate in strengthening and conditioning exercises, enjoy games like dodgeball and volleyball, and engage in friendly match play against coaches and fellow campers. This varied approach keeps energy high and ensures children stay engaged throughout the day.

A unique aspect of the Specter Center experience is the opportunity to watch Team USA national players who practice at the facility twice daily. Campers can observe these elite athletes, analyzing their techniques and learning by watching professionals in action.

Lightner added that “emphasis is placed on fostering a passion for the game while promoting fun, teamwork, sportsmanship, and personal growth.”

Philadelphia parents will appreciate that their children aren’t just keeping busy—they’re developing character and important social-emotional skills alongside their athletic abilities. The balance of structured training and playful activities keeps kids engaged throughout the day.
