Celebrate the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. with events and volunteer opportunities throughout Philadelphia this weekend and on Monday. Local museums, parks, and organizations are all hosting a wide variety of family-friendly ways to commemorate MLK’s legacy and give back this year.

The African American Museum in Philadelphia is hosting a weekend full of activities, celebrations, volunteer opportunities, and workshops to celebrate MLK Day. The museum will offer free admission on Monday. Find the full schedule on their website.

Martin Luther King Jr. Weekend at the Museum of the American Revolution

January 14-16

Honor the life, service, and legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. over MLK Weekend at the Museum of the American Revolution to with special performances and tours to discover the ongoing legacy of the American Revolution and learn what it takes to change the world.

Volunteer Day of Service at Wissahickon Valley Park 

January 16, 9 a.m.-12 p.m.

Wissahickon Valley Park, Valley Green Road

 

Volunteers will be giving back to the Wissahickon Valley Park, it’s users, the creek, and the plants and animals that rely on it to live. This year, the clean-up will be beneath and around the recently re-opened bridges that connect Forbidden Drive to the paved bike path. Removing this litter will not only make this area of the park more beautiful, but it will keep our watershed healthier for all!

MLK Day of Service with Bartram’s Garden

This year, the Bartram’s Garden staff invites you to join them in a cleanup of their Southwest Philly neighborhood in support of the African Family Health Organization.

Families are welcome to come read with their kids at the Kutest Kids Parents as Teachers facility. Book donations from community members and families are welcome prior to and during the event.

MLK Day of Service at Schuylkill Center

January 16, 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

 

All members of the community are invited to work on service projects aimed at protecting the health of our local forests as well as supporting the Schuylkill Center. There will be a wide range of service projects available so everyone can participate! Registration required.

Woodmere Art Museum is hosting a family-friendly festival to celebrate MLK Day with artmaking, storytelling, and a hip-hop dance workshop.

Cradles to Crayons Annual Day of Service & Clothing Drive 

 

Cradles to Crayons offers several opportunities for volunteer engagement to help children living in poverty in the greater Philadelphia area. Their MLK Day donation drive is important for their work of distributing clothes to thousands of local children.
