When Should My Child See an Orthodontist?

Even teeth that look straight may be hiding an unhealthy bite. An orthodontist can spot subtle problems and determine if treatment is necessary.

As a parent, you want what’s best for your child. So does Top of the Hill Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics, and that includes healthy teeth and a beautiful smile. Well-aligned teeth look and feel great. They contribute to good dental health and the ability to speak, chew, and bite.

Start with regular dental care. The American Dental Association recommends that a child visit the dentist by his or her first birthday, while baby (primary) teeth are emerging. Often, it’s the pediatric dentist that first notices a problem and can alert you to any concerns about how the teeth and jaws are developing.

When should my child see an orthodontist?

As a dual dental specialty practice, our pediatric dentist at Top of the Hill Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics, Dr. Abbey Orozco, often gets asked the question, “When should my child see an orthodontist?” Although orthodontic treatment can be performed at any age, the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that your child be evaluated by an orthodontist no later than age 7. Most kids have their adult molars in by age 7, which makes it the perfect time to get an orthodontic evaluation. While orthodontic treatment most often begins between the ages of 9 and 14, some children’s orthodontic problems can benefit from earlier treatment. Seeing your child at a young age allows your orthodontist identify developing problems and determine the most appropriate treatment at the most appropriate time.

Why an orthodontist?

Orthodontists are dental specialists who diagnose, prevent, and treat dental and facial irregularities. They receive an additional two to three years of specialized education beyond dental school. It is not always easy to tell when your child has an orthodontic problem. Even teeth that look straight may be hiding an unhealthy bite. An orthodontist can spot subtle problems and determine if treatment is necessary.
