St. Peter’s School is a joyful and inclusive community of engaged learners and dedicated teachers, nestled in the Historic Philadelphia neighborhood of Society Hill. The non-sectarian, independent, coeducational school has been educating students in Preschool (Age 3) through Eighth Grade to be kind, generous, and committed citizens of the world since 1834.

St. Peter’s School (SPS) strives to foster an early and lifelong love of learning, cultivate inclusivity and compassion, and instill honesty and respect for everyone in the community. SPS works hard to know the students and families well, and prioritizes the development of caring relationships among the students, faculty and families.

Early Education: Preschool Through Kindergarten

A strong educational foundation is laid in Early Childhood at St. Peter’s School, where child- directed learning, imagination, and play are emphasized daily. In these Preschool, Prekindergarten, and Kindergarten years, students access the intellectual tools to solve their own problems. The Early Childhood program goals are to inspire the children to love learning, to encourage independence, and to build self-confidence.

The Elementary Years: Grades 1 – 5

Students in the Elementary Years take intellectual risks, develop self-awareness and gain independence through an educational experience that honors the richness of childhood. The faculty encourages students to read, collaborate, and think critically as well as ask questions and explore to gain a better understanding of themselves and the world.

Curriculum for the Sixth through Eighth Graders is intentionally designed to be creative, relevant, engaging and challenging. The SPS faculty advise and help guide the students’ academic pursuits, encourage artistic expression, support their social and emotional growth and facilitate student-driven conversations about self knowledge and cultural awareness.

The School’s excellent academic program at all grade levels emphasizes integrated and thematic studies, learning that is both student-centered and project-based, and meaningful, relevant work, while never losing sight of the importance of play! By constructing a curriculum around creative problem solving and broader learning-how-to-learn strategies, students develop
skills that will support their learning through life.

Additionally, focus on Social Emotional Learning and Character Development is incorporated into what they do each day. Through a daily commitment to honoring the School’s Community Code, all individuals strive to be kind, compassionate, and inclusive. They are reminded to be respectful of, and honest with themselves, their work, and others, and everyone is encouraged to be their best selves!
