2023 is the Year of the Rabbit!

2023 is the Year of the Rabbit! The Lunar New Year is officially on January 22, but there are plenty of events before and after in Philadelphia. Many of these events are kid-friendly and include performances, workshops, and delicious food.

Lunar New Year at Penn Museum

January 21, 10 am-4 pm

The Penn Museum is hosting their annual Lunar New Year celebration as part of Culturefest, in partnership with the American Chinese Museum. The event will include the traditional Lion Dance performed by Penn Lions, the University of Pennsylvania’s premier Chinese Lion Dance troupe, as well as other traditional and contemporary music and dance performances. Perfect for all ages, the celebration storytelling and craft activities throughout the day.

Kun-Yang Lin Dancers at the Please Touch Museum

Join the Kun-Yang Lin Dancers, a contemporary Asian-American dance company, for a performance in The Please Touch Museum’s theater, followed by a meet-and-greet.

Chinese Lunar New Year Hand Made Dumpling Making Event

January 21, 29, and February 5, 11 am, February 14, 6 pm

The Dumpling Academy is bringing the Chinese Lunar New Year Hand Made Dumpling Event back to Philadelphia this year! Participants will be able to attend a fun DIY Dumpling + Tangyuan/or Wonton Soup cooking experience.

Lunar New Year at Rothman Orthopaedics Cabin

January 21, 5-7 pm

Dilworth Park, 1 S 15th Street

 

Celebrate at the Rothman Orthopaedics Ice Rink, where there will be a prancing lion, traditional Chinese dancers, and a delicious menu. The first 100 guests will receive a lucky red envelope containing secret prizes. Ice skating sessions will be available throughout the evening.

The Philadelphia Suns will be hosting a Lunar New Year Parade through Chinatown on Sunday, January 22nd. The parade begins at 10th and Spring Streets.

Celebrate Lunar New Year as the Philadelphia Suns join the Please Touch Museum for two performances exploring the traditional lion dance with costumes, movements, and music.

Lunar New Year Celebration at Reading Terminal Market

January 28, 11 am

The Philadelphia Suns will parade through Reading Terminal Market to celebrate Lunar New Year, stopping at the Sang Kee Peking Duck, Tea Leaf, Four Seasons Juice Bar, Shanghai Gourmet, and Tambayan.

Lunar New Year Celebration at Parkway Central Library

The Free Library of Philadelphia and Pennsylvania Asian Institute are co-hosting an afternoon of celebration at Parkway Central Library perfect for families. Enjoy an afternoon of fascinating Asian music and dance performances, a children’s Taekwondo demonstration, a cultural fashion show, and more!

Join Friends of the Rail Park, Philadelphia Chinatown Development CorporationAsian Arts InitiativePhiladelphia Suns, and Callowhill Neighborhood Association to celebrate the Lunar New Year at the Rail Park! Ring in the Year of the Rabbit with us with free, family-friendly activities, light refreshments, and a lion dance performance by the Philadelphia Suns at 2 p.m. This event is free, with the option to make a donation to support Friends of the Rail Park.

The Philadelphia Chinatown Development Corporation is hosting their Chinese New Year Banquet at the Crane Center in February.
